The all-new BMW iX3 50 xDrive, part of BMW’s Neue Klasse series, redefines what it means to drive sustainably. Designed with a 360° sustainability approach, the iX3 focuses on reducing environmental impact across its entire life cycle, from manufacturing to road use and end of life.
Sustainable Supply Chain
BMW’s sustainability efforts begin before the vehicle is even built. During the iX3’s development, supply chain emissions were reduced by 35%.
BMW have prioritised the use of recyled materials and using renewable energy through out production. The Gen6 high-voltage battery cells use 50% recycled cobalt, lithium, and nickel. Renewable energy is used in the creation of anode/cathode materials and during cell production, leading to a 42% reduction in CO₂e emissions per watt-hour compared to previous battery generations.
Built Without Fossil Fuels
The iX3 is produced at BMW’s new Debrecen plant in Hungary, the first BMW facility powered 100% by renewable electricity, with no oil or gas used under standard operations. Built on the BMW iFactory principles, even the paint shop ovens are heated using surplus solar energy stored in a thermal unit.
As a result, the iX3 generates just 0.1 tons of CO₂e during production.
BMW’s “Design for Circularity” principle
A core principle of the BMW Neue Klasse Series, the new BMW iX3 embodies the brand’s commitment to a circular economy. By integrating recycled materials to reduce waste, one-third of the iX3 is made from secondary raw materials.
This includes:
- 30% recycled maritime plastic, such as old fishing nets and ropes, used in the engine compartment cover and front storage area.
- Secondary aluminum makes up 80% of the wheel carriers and swivel bearings, and 70% of the cast aluminum wheels.
- The fully recyclable Econeer seat covers are made entirely from recycled PET bottles.
- Additionally, key components like the center console, instrument panel, and floor trim are thoughtfully designed to enable easier recycling at the end of the vehicle’s life cycle.
20% More Efficent
Thanks to improved aerodynamics, lower rolling resistance, reduced on-board power consumption, and an efficient drivetrain, the new BMW iX3 consumes 20% less energy than its predecessor. It proudly delivers maximum performance with a reduced environmental impact, perfectly aligned with BMW’s EfficientDynamics philosophy.
CO₂e Break-Even
Thanks to significant decarbonisation across the supply chain and production, the new BMW iX3 achieves its CO₂e break-even point much earlier than previous models.
When charged using the European energy mix, it outperforms the lifetime emissions of a comparable internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle after just 21,500 kilometers (WLTP combined) (13,359 miles).
Use 100% renewable electricity, and that drops to just 17,500 kilometers (10,874 miles)
This means most drivers will reach the CO₂e break-even point within their first one to two years on the road.
Verified Transparency
For complete transparency, BMW has published the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) of the iX3 50 xDrive. Verified by TÜV (Germany’s Technical Inspection Association), the report is available via BMW’s official website and in the My BMW app.
With production starting in November 2025, the new BMW iX3 50 xDrive sets a new benchmark for vehicles built with sustainability at their core.
