Range Rover Electric Arrives

Range Rover Electric Arrives
Posted On By Lease Elecrtric

The wait is over. Range Rover has officially launched its first fully electric Range Rover, bringing electric power to one of the UK's best-known luxury SUVs.

Built alongside other Range Rover models in Solihull, the new Range Rover Electric combines the familiar design, luxury and all-terrain capability of the existing Range Rover with a new fully electric powertrain.

With up to 372 miles of WLTP range, 350kW rapid charging and 550PS, it also arrives with some impressive EV credentials.

Up to 372 Miles of Electric Range

At the heart of the Range Rover Electric is a large 118.5kWh usable battery, paired with two 260kW electric motors.

Together, they deliver up to 550PS and 850Nm of torque, with 0-60mph taking as little as 4.3 seconds.

More importantly for everyday use, Range Rover is quoting an official WLTP range of up to 372 miles, alongside an estimated real-world range of up to 333 miles.

That puts the Range Rover Electric firmly into long-distance EV territory, with enough range to comfortably cover most daily driving and longer motorway journeys.

350kW Rapid Charging

A large battery needs equally impressive charging capabilities, and the Range Rover Electric uses an 800-volt electrical architecture to support rapid charging at up to 350kW.

Connected to a suitable ultra-rapid charger, the battery can be charged from 10-80% in around 22 minutes.

A 10-minute charging stop can also add up to 137 miles of WLTP range, making longer journeys considerably easier.

For home charging, Range Rover states a full charge takes around 19 hours using a typical 7kW home charger, or around seven hours using a 22kW AC connection.

Designed to be a Range Rover

Going electric hasn't meant giving up the capabilities Range Rover is known for.

The Range Rover Electric can wade through water up to 900mm deep and tow up to 2,500kg.

New electric traction technology can respond significantly faster than a traditional combustion-powered drivetrain, while a new single-pedal driving system works alongside Range Rover's Terrain Response technology to provide greater control both on and off-road.

Range Rover says the system can even tackle rolling climbs of up to 45 degrees.

Familiar Design, Electric Underneath

Range Rover hasn't dramatically changed the appearance of the car to advertise its electric powertrain.

Instead, the existing Range Rover design has been retained, with relatively subtle changes including an aerodynamically optimised grille, new wheel designs and changes underneath the vehicle to improve aerodynamic efficiency.

It's a sensible approach for a model with such a recognisable design, this is still very clearly a Range Rover, it just happens to be electric.

Inside, electric propulsion should arguably suit the Range Rover particularly well. The absence of an engine helps create an even quieter cabin, supported by acoustic laminated glass and Active Noise Cancellation technology.

Tested for the Real World

Range Rover has put its first electric model through an extensive development programme ahead of launch.

Testing has included temperatures as low as -40°C in Sweden, extreme heat in Dubai and off-road development closer to home at JLR's Eastnor Castle facility.

The vehicle has covered more than 1.5 million kilometres of physical testing, alongside more than 250,000 hours of virtual testing.

Range Rover has also developed its new ThermAssist heat management technology, designed to reduce the energy required for heating by up to 40% and help protect range and charging performance in different temperatures.

Built in Britain

The Range Rover Electric will be manufactured at JLR's Solihull plant, where Range Rovers have been built since 1970.

Its battery packs and electric drive units are also manufactured by JLR at its Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre in Wolverhampton.

It's another important addition to the growing number of electric vehicles being built here in the UK.

When Can You Order the Range Rover Electric?

UK order books for the Range Rover Electric are open now, with prices starting from £154,070 on the road.

The electric model will be offered across SE, HSE and Autobiography specifications, alongside SV, SV Ultra and SV Black models. Standard and long-wheelbase versions will also be available, depending on specification.

A dedicated First Edition has also been introduced for the launch.
