- A new public charge point was installed every 26 minutes over the last quarter
- Almost one in three charge points in the network today was installed in the last 12 months
- There is almost one charging point for every EV currently on UK roads
For many searching for a new car, considering an EV is deemed 'off the table' due to a perceived lack of charging infrastructure available in the UK. But EV charger numbers are on the rise.
A recent white paper from ChargeUK highlights that the public charge point network in the UK has grown by 8% in the last quarter and 47% over the past year. On average, a new public charge point was installed every 26 minutes last quarter. There is nearly one charger for every electric vehicle (EV) on the road, with 931,323 charge points across homes, workplaces, and public locations supporting 1.1 million EVs.
But what about the future?
The Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate, effective from January 2024, requires manufacturers to sell an increasing percentage of EVs, reaching 100% by 2035. However, The Labour Party has pledged to end sales of new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2030, although no official announcement has been made since they came to power just over ten days ago. Regardless of whether the target date is 2030 or 2035, the ZEV mandate necessitates a significant increase in charging infrastructure to meet the growing demand.
Recent analysis indicates that the number of public charge points is growing faster than the number of electric vehicles (EVs) on the road. If this trend continues throughout the 2020s, we can expect the charging infrastructure to be well ahead of the number of EVs by 2030.
