At Lease Electric, we take pride in assisting businesses that are ready to transition towards a cleaner, more sustainable future. One such organisation is Hewer Facilities Management, a well-respected name in the fields of heating, renewable energy, electrical, and mechanical contracting for both domestic and commercial sectors.
With a fleet of over 100 operational vans, Hewer is committed to decarbonizing their vehicles and reducing emissions. However, in an industry where engineers can accumulate up to 500 miles a week, often involving stop-and-go city driving, the choice to switch to electric necessitates more than just good intentions. Hewer requires proven performance and practicality.
To support Hewer Facilities Management in their evaluation, Lease Electric arranged a real-world trial of the Volkswagen ID. Buzz Cargo.
After a comprehensive week of utilising the VW ID. Buzz across their service routes, Hewer has provided the following case study, which offers valuable insights into performance, practicality, and the potential for fleet integration.
Putting the ID. Buzz to the Test
In pursuit of the right EV solution, Hewer Facilities Management was presented with the opportunity to test drive the new ID Buzz Electric Van, arranged through Leese Electric. The experience was seamless from the outset, with Leese Electric personally delivering the vehicle to Hewer head office. Their team provided a comprehensive walkthrough of the van’s features, and shared expert tips on how to optimise battery range during daily use.
With enthusiasm, Hewer engineers incorporated the ID Buzz into their regular operations over the course of a week. The aim was to truly understand how the van would perform under real-world, high-demand conditions.
Positive Feedback from the Front Line
The response from the engineering team was overwhelmingly positive. Highlights from their feedback included:
- Performance: The van felt incredibly responsive and light, enhancing the driving experience, especially in urban environments.
- Visibility: Engineers praised the spacious cabin and wide 180-degree view, which significantly reduced blind spots and improved road awareness.
- Comfort & Design: The interior was described as smart, modern, and fun, with a “funky” onboard computer system and an ergonomic seating position that made long days on the road more comfortable.
The trial reassured Hewer that the transition to electric can be made without compromising the quality or efficiency of their service delivery.
Progress with Perspective
The successful trial represents a significant step forward for Hewer in its journey towards a fully electric fleet. While the ID Buzz exceeded expectations in terms of comfort, functionality, and performance, there are still several operational considerations that need to be addressed before a full-scale rollout can be confirmed. These outstanding factors, unrelated to the performance of the vehicle itself are part of the broader transition planning and infrastructure development that naturally accompany such a large-scale change. However, this trial has provided clarity, confidence, and a clearer path forward.
A Word of Recommendation
For organisations considering a transition to electric vehicles, Hewer Facilities Management wholeheartedly recommends Leese Electric. Their team takes the time to understand your operational needs, address concerns honestly, and provide tailored solutions with integrity and expertise.
